Aiming High to Excel and Exceed

Summer Term

In Science, we have been carrying out our comparative test where we tested different materials to answer our investigation question. We wanted to know which material would be the best one for Traction Man to use to make goggles from. We knew it had to be waterproof and transparent. It was a lot of fun testing each material!

In English, we have been immersing ourselves in key vocabulary in preparation for writing a character description on Traction Man. In these sessions we have used the vocabulary to describe Traction Man's appearance and personality and then sequenced sentences.

In our Science unit, we have started to look at seeds and bulbs and how plants grow. In these sessions, we observed and dissected seeds and bulbs and then we sorted them in Venn diagrams.

The children loved creating 3D shapes from 2D nets. It was fascinating to observe the transformation and to also understand how 3D shapes are made up.

The children immersed themselves in conjunctions and learnt how to identify a simple, compound and complex sentence in preparation for their Traction Man writing.

During this English session, we checked for errors in sentences. We looked for spelling mistakes, sentence structure errors, missing capital letters and missing punctuation. The children were horrified at all the mistakes they found!

In English, we have started our new unit about The Enormous Crocodile. Today we spent time exploring the key vocabulary and linking it to The Enormous Crocodile.

In English, we then moved on to sequencing the sentences from the text and then used interesting verbs to describe the animals movements.

In History, the children have been exploring the achievements of Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. They read and then sorted them into who they thought had achieved what. They then worked in trios to answer a statement and whether they agreed or disagreed.

In Science, it has been wonderful to see our cress seeds germinate. We setup our comparative test and answered our investigation question ‘what do plants need to grow and stay healthy?’ We were fascinated by what happened to the cress which had been denied enough water, heat and sunlight.

In DT, we are starting our new unit. The children spent some time finding out about different types of potatoes, how they can be cooked and what the healthiest option is. We cannot wait to make our potato salads in a couple of weeks.

In our English unit, the children have been learning about rhyming pairs in preparation for writing their own rhyming couplets in a couple of weeks. Today they played the game of snap with our key vocabulary, keeping a keen look out for the rhyming pairs.
